BIOGRAPHICAL DETAILS

After completing a degree in Graphic design and illustration at S.A.C.A.E,j, Adelaide in 1988, Stuart McLachlan worked

internationally as an illustrator. He lived and worked in Amsterdam at “The Professionals”, an illustration and visualising

business followed by Montreal Canada, then Vancouver where he spent six years with his North American agent

“Sharpshooter”. Currently represented as an illustrator and poster designer by the Jacky Winter group.

Regarded world-wide as one of the leading paper sculptors, McLachlan's numerous commissions have seen his work

adorn private collections , theatre stages, fashion runways and publications.

2017- Commissioned to produce 7 x Geo filters for the international release of the Activision WW2 Call of Duty game.

These filters were used in New York, London and internationally to promote the release on the new game.

2017- 8 posters for Victorian Transport featuring suburbs including, St. Kilda, and the Heide Gallery etc.

2017- Acquisition of sculpture In the Name of the Father – to the Kate Smith collection.

2017 – 9 Hours Underground - Contemporary art show, Sydney Opera House.

2016 - Commissioned to produce a paper art scene to be used in Montreal, Canada flagship Loblaws store in the area of

Mont Royale for use as an 8 meter x 6 metre photographic mural at the entrance of the flagship store.

2016 – Exclusive Australia Post commission to create art for the 2016 Christmas ‘Nativity’ series of 3 stamps.

as well as a mini sheet folder representing Jerusalem. Featuring hand cut paper artwork.

2015 – Commissioned to illustrate The Christmas Island, Christmas stamp series for Australia Post.

2015 - Star City Christmas Bauble. Commissioned to design 8 2.2 meter multi layered coloured perspex windows

encased in a 6 meter diameter bauble . Placed at the Star City Casino foyer 4 weeks during the Christmas season.

2014 – State Opera of South Australia - Hand cut ( paper ) and designed the 2014 season posters including La Traviata,

Otello, and the Phillip Glass trilogy of operas, Einstein on the Beach, Akhnaten and Satyagraha.

2014 - Paper Cuts ( USA) 300 page art book. The book goes behind the scenes of 30 of the world’s top paper artists.

2013 – Lonely Planet Special Edition Box Set- London, Paris, New York. Designed and illustrated art for the covers of

each of these titles as well as the box cover for 3 special released sets of travel guide books.

2013 - World of Wearable Art 25th Anniversary show in Wellington, New Zealand – Co-wrote the script for the 2 hour

stage show with show founder Dame Suzie Moncrief.

2013 - World of Wearable Art 25th Anniversary- Designed 12x7metre finale set for the Avante Garde section finale of the

show as well as costume and hat designs for several sections of the show, based on my paper art.

2013 – Finalist in Hazelhurst Art prize, artwork entitled Aurora’s Night.

2012 – Artwork published in book Paper Art, published by “Artpower”, Hong Kong.

2012 - Asked by Susan Rockefeller to include a works in an auction held by Christies Auctioneers at the Rockefeller

Centre in New York City.

2012- PaperWorks –art book, (China). Inclusion of many of my paper art works within this 300 page art book on

international paper art.

2011 – Artwork published in the book Papercraft 2 (Published and distributed internationally Gestalten from Berlin).

2011 – Keynote speaker and presenter at the 2011 International Design Conference, AGideas in Melbourne.

2011- ‘Sydney Writers Festival’ speaker and panelist. Presentation of work and discussion of book design in Australia.

2011- Recipient of 2 Gold, 2 Silver and 4 Bronze awards in the Illustrators Australia Illustration Awards.

2011- IdN Magazine, December 2011 issue. - artist selected for “pick of the month” section. Published in Hong Kong,

distributed internationally.

2010 - Devils Lair Winery films.

2010 - Exclusive illustrator for Bulmers Cider posters.

2010 - Come to the Show - series of 5 stamps commissioned for Australia Post.

2010- Winner of “Best Designed Fiction book in Australia”, runner up “Best designed Book Cover in Australia” in the

“2010 Australian Publishing Awards”.

2009 - “2009 ; 20th Anniversary of the French Film Festival” for the event.

2008 - Poster celebrating the 10th Anniversary for Toby’s Estate Coffee.

2008 – Poster design for The 2008 French Film Festival.

2008 - Commissioned to design 5 stamps for Australia Post entitled Australian Backyard Inventions.

2007- Designed an exclusive fabric pattern for Collette Dinnigan used on dresses, bikinis and accessories in her 2007

Spring Collection shown in Paris.

2006 – Included in ‘Lurzer’s Archive ‘ Best 200 Illustrators Worldwide.

Produced a series of billboard ads appearing across 40 States in America for “Wrigley’s“ gum which are included as part

of the Wrigley’s Museum’s permanent collection in Chicago.

While in Sydney; I established, organised and curated the first “Humane Society International” art show named

“Extinction Denied”. I contacted and procured paintings from most of the 35 or so artists contributing works to raise

funds for the protection of animals. Artists included Archibald Portrait prize winners, Adam Cullen, Nicholas Harding

and Mambo man, Reg Mombassa as well as many other leading Australian fine artists. I was responsible for procuring

the gallery

space, designing of posters and brochures and painted a piece for the show. The annual show continues and is

in its sixth year raising close to $150,000 for the charity during that time.

2005 – 2006 Designed 6 paintings including hand-designed typography for a worldwide poster series for Singapore

Airlines. These posters were based on the 1940’s poster style and featured the airlines 6 regional destinations: Australia,

India, South East Asia, North America, and Europe appearing in airports, travel agents etc. They also appeared in full

page ads in The New Yorker, Time, Newsweek and Economist magazines.

2004 –10 images chosen for the Campaign Brief’s Illustration Awards.

2000 – Created 20 full page colour illustrations for the complete unabridged version of “Alice’s Adventures in

Wonderland”, published by International Masters Publishers. The edition of 5000 copies has since sold out.

1999 - Awarded best illustration for the Pacific Northwest (U.S.A.) and Caribbean magazine awards for the illustration

entitled “Swing Time”.

1997- First fine art show of paintings entitled Vagabonds in Paris, France.

1996 – Runner up for Best Worldwide Print Advertisement for a Film Commission. Designer and illustrator of ads for the

British Columbian Film Commission, placed in The Hollywood Reporter and other such film trade mags.

1995 - Designed creatures for the first 7 episodes of the television series The Outer Limits, including the first movie

length episode. Created ads for the Banff Television Awards for several years, as well as 3 annual covers for the

Hollywood movie talent directory, the Blu Book.

1995 – Recipient of the Lotus Award, awarded to one illustrator in Vancouver for the best illustration category
